Iguana
Care: Diet
Proper diet is one of the most important aspects of
responsible iguana care. Not only will the proper diet
allow your ig to grow big and healthy but will help
in preventing Metabolic
Bone Disease (or MBD) and/or renal failure. Green
iguanas are aboreal lizards residing in trees in the
wild, feeding off of leaves and fruits of those trees.
However, since a lot of green iguanas originate from
South America, duplicating their diet in captivity is
nearly impossible. Luckily, there are fruits and vegetables,
that with proper ratio, will suffice. A balanced iguana
diet consists of the right calcium to phosphorus ratio
with the right amounts of protein, carbohydrates and
other nutrients. The majority of the diet should consist
of collards, turnip greens, mustard greens and dandelion
leaves to name a few.

There are two popular and effective iguana diets:
The
Iguana Den Diet
This diet is very popular among iguana owners and is
the diet used by the NCIRA. The Iguana Den Diet is backed
by years of experience and research. Click

on the left frame for more information.
The
Melissa Kaplan Iguana Diet
This diet was developed by Melissa Kaplan, a well known
and respected herpetologist. We have personally found
the Iguana
Den diet to be more effective for our rescues, but
your results may vary. Click
